Medium Rigid truck training - NorthBound Commercial Training

Medium Rigid (MR)

Step up to the next level in transport - significantly expanding your employment opportunities in commercial driving roles.

What is a Medium Rigid (MR) Licence?

A Medium Rigid (MR) licence allows you to operate rigid vehicles with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 8 tonnes. This is a common licence category for many commercial driving roles, from local deliveries to specialized transport. With an MR licence, you can also tow a trailer with a GVM of up to 9 tonnes, adding to your versatility as a driver.

Vehicles You Can Drive with an MR Licence

An MR licence authorises you to drive:

  • A motor vehicle with two axles and a GVM greater than 8 tonnes, such as larger delivery trucks, tippers, and buses.
  • A special purpose vehicle with two axles and a GVM greater than 8 tonnes, or a vehicle with three or more axles and a GVM not exceeding 15 tonnes.
  • A vehicle in the above categories towing a single trailer (other than a semi-trailer) with a GVM of up to 9 tonnes.

Prerequisites for an MR Licence

To be eligible to obtain a Medium Rigid licence in South Australia, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have held a Class C (car) licence for at least one year
  • A medical assessment may be required to ensure you are fit to operate a heavy vehicle
  • Have a current & valid SA Drivers Licence
  • Provide overseas licence evidence if SA Licence has been held for less than 2 years

Our Comprehensive Training Program

We deliver our training in accordance with the nationally recognised Competency Based Training & Assessment (CBT&A) framework, using the official South Australian Government trainee guides. This ensures you receive a thorough and standardised education.

For an MR licence in a manual gearbox vehicle, we find that most applicants require approximately 10 hours of training to achieve competency.

We offer the flexibility of training in our modern, industry-standard vehicles or in your own vehicle, as long as it meets the necessary government safety and registration requirements.
