Light Rigid truck training - NorthBound Commercial Training

Light Rigid (LR)

Your ticket to expanding your skills and unlocking more job opportunities - the perfect starting point for your heavy vehicle journey.

What is a Light Rigid (LR) Licence?

An LR licence is your ticket to driving rigid vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) between 4.5 and 8 tonnes. This category also includes buses designed to carry more than 12 adults, making it a versatile qualification for various industries. Whether you're looking to drive a small removalist truck, a local delivery van, or a community bus, the LR licence is the perfect starting point for your heavy vehicle journey.

Vehicles You Can Drive with an LR Licence

With a Light Rigid licence, you are authorised to drive:

  • A motor vehicle with a GVM greater than 4.5 tonnes but not exceeding 8 tonnes. This includes a wide range of trucks, vans, and tippers.
  • A bus with a GVM not greater than 8 tonnes, designed to carry 13 or more seated persons.
  • A vehicle in the above categories towing a single trailer, as long as the combination mass limits are not exceeded.

Prerequisites for an LR Licence

To be eligible to apply for a Light Rigid licence in South Australia, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have held a Class C (car) licence for at least one year
  • Provide a medical certificate to confirm you are medically fit to drive a heavy vehicle (may be required)
  • Have a current & valid SA Drivers Licence
  • Provide overseas licence evidence if SA Licence has been held for less than 2 years

Our Training Approach

At NorthBound, we follow the nationally recognised Competency Based Training & Assessment (CBT&A) program, using the official South Australian Government trainee guides. This ensures you are trained to the highest standards of safety and competency.

We find that most applicants require approximately 10 hours of training to become proficient and ready for assessment in a manual gearbox vehicle.

We can provide training in our modern, well-maintained vehicles, or if you prefer, we can train you in your own vehicle, provided it meets the minimum government requirements.

Training Information

All training is conducted using the South Australian Government Light Rigid/Medium Rigid CBT&A Trainee Guide.
