What is a Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence?
A Heavy Rigid (HR) licence authorises you to drive any rigid vehicle with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8,000 kg. This includes a vast array of trucks and buses, making it an essential licence for many driving roles.

Prerequisites for an HR Licence
To be eligible to apply for a Heavy Rigid licence in South Australia, you must meet one of the following experience requirements:
- Have held a Class C (car) licence for at least two years
- Have held a Light Rigid (LR) or Medium Rigid (MR) licence for at least one year
In addition, you must:
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Have a current & valid SA Drivers Licence
- Provide a medical certificate to confirm your fitness to drive (may be required)
- Provide overseas licence evidence if SA Licence has been held for less than 2 years
Unrestricted vs. Automatic
We offer training for both unrestricted (manual) and automatic HR licences. To obtain an unrestricted HR licence, you will need to learn to drive a vehicle with a "Roadranger" gearbox. This non-synchromesh manual transmission is a staple of the trucking industry, and mastering it will significantly broaden your employment prospects.
For those who prefer a simpler learning curve, we also offer training in modern automatic trucks, which will result in a licence restricted to automatic vehicles.
Our Proven Training Method
We adhere to the nationally recognised Competency Based Training & Assessment (CBT&A) program, utilising the official South Australian Government trainee guides. This structured approach ensures you receive a comprehensive and high-quality education.
We estimate that most students require approximately 16 hours of training for a manual HR licence and 12 hours for an automatic HR licence to achieve competency.
We provide training in our modern, safe, and well-maintained vehicles. Alternatively, we can train you in your own vehicle, provided it meets the necessary government standards.
